Nutri2Cycle invited by the European Commission to discuss food security

30/11/2022

On 22 November Nutri2Cycle was invited by the European Commission to join their internal workshop on food security and discuss how research and innovation can concretely contribute to face the challenges encountered at global level. Professor Erik Meers, coordinator of Nutri2Cycle, presented the overall concept of the project and how its outcomes can feed nutrient efficient agriculture in Europe and contribute to food security with decreased external inputs.

Erik Meers explained how circular bio-based fertilisers can help boosting crop productivity while reducing farming costs and environmental impact by using the right amounts of nitrogen where and when plants need it and finding ways to reduce nutrient losses to the environment.

Additionally, circularity in agriculture also contributes to the self-reliance in regards with guaranteeing food security.
